SEnA Initial Conference Facilitates Grocery Packer to Receive P20K after Voluntary Resignation

by: Lester B. Panem, Senior LEO

A 15-year grocery packer/refiller was handed P20, 000 by his employer right after they signed their agreement at the National Conciliation & Mediation Board Regional Branch No. 1.

Saying he was unable to withstand his employer’s verbal reprimands that hurt and embarrasses him at the workplace, Abacco filed his Request for Assistance at this Branch on October 7, 2014. “He was pretty much emotional,” NCMB RB1 Director Brenda Rose C. Odsey noted referring to the tearful and trembling Abacco while telling his story.

Abacco added that he can no longer live with the way they treat him and other employees as well at the grocery. However, he had not yet tendered his resignation when he filed the RFA.

Meeting with Ms. Eden Lim, management representative, on the October 10, 2014 initial conference, Abacco was told that they still need his services and is welcome to return to work if he decides so.

Inspite of the niceties shown to him, he remained firm and asked to be paid of his 13th month pay even when explained to him of the consequence of his voluntary resignation.

Despite willfully terminating his employment, the store’s management has the practice of providing financial assistance to those who resign from their works. Except for the P5, 000 13th month pay due for Abacco, Ms, Lim was ready to have a cash out of additional P10,000 as financial assistance, who admitted they made preparations in case he remains firm on his decision.

The Branch was able to facilitate an additional P5, 000 for the financial assistance. When presented about the offer, he thought for a while and decided to accept it.
