NCMB  Region 1 Successfully Carries 2nd Area-wide Seminar for 2014

by: Lester B. Panem, Senior LEO

The National Conciliation & Mediation Board Regional Branch No. 1 carried yet another fruitful region-wide seminar at PTA Beach Resort, San Fabian, Pangasinan on October 24, 2014.

With the theme “Performance & Productivity in a Gender-Bias Free Workplace,” the activity saw a clientele turnout of 79 people from both labor and management coming from 42 different companies.

“I am very glad to see a lot of you,” Engr. Ariel Gapasin said, President of I-CARE, Inc. “I am thankful that you continually support our programs and activities such as this. And I am proud to say that we have achieved many of our goals this year,” he added as he delivered his welcome address.

“We are, as well, pleased for your responsiveness to our invitations,” NCMB Director Brenda Rose C. Odsey said in her message following that of Mr. Gapasin’s.

“The major thrust of the Board, as you know, is the promotion, cultivation and maintenance of industrial peace at the plant level. There is nothing more rewarding to us and beneficial to you and your company than industrial peace holding fast even in the presence of troublous circumstances,” Odsey noted.

“Always put in mind that labor and management are inseparable partners, like husband and wife. One needs the other and neither survives alone,” she added.

The activity featured convergence with the RTWPB-1 as they cascaded their Green Productivity thrust to the audience courtesy of Ms. Virginia M. Salvador, LEO III. Participants were also given updates about BIR’s recent revenue regulations and a review about withholding taxes and substituted filing.

Mr. Jojo L. Tandoc, Assistant Vice-President of DMCI Power Corporation, formerly connected with Team Sual of Pangasinan, gave a discussion about Performance Management System. His session provided valuable insights in the planning, monitoring, and evaluation of PMS. “Of these three, the company usually neglects the monitoring stage which results to unreliable performance ratings on the evaluative stage,” Tandoc emphasized.

“Linking the PMS to the company’s rewards system is also as important,” he said mentioning the critical factor of the company’s ability to pay said rewards. “It must be understood that the PMS, rewards system and the company’s ability to pay be put in proper light so as not to drain the company’s blood line,” Tandoc emphasized.

DOLE RO1 Assistant Regional Director Atty. Florence Marie G. Ulep, a member of the Regional Advocates for Gender Equality (RAGE), and a usual speaker for NCMB RB1, provided enlightening wisdom about gender issues prevailing in the community and in the workplace. “Men and women ought to have equal opportunities may it be at home, employment or the workplace,” Atty. Ulep averred.

Highlight of the seminar is the sharing of LMC Best Practices by two renowned achievers in that field. HOLCIM, Philippines – La Union Plant, winner of the Search for BEST LMC Practices award in 2009 for the organized category, showed the audience why they achieved such feat. It featured their TALAKAYAN, the name of their LMC Program, which means “dialogue” and the benefits it provided them through the years carrying on the core values of strength, passion and performance.

The MANOR at Camp John Hay in Baguio City featured their inspiring journey towards winning the 2011 search for the unorganized category and garnering a special award the previous year for the same event. With a simple vision of “Make It Better,” The MANOR at Camp John Hay encouraged the audience to work on building their LMC programs and experience the true benefit of industrial peace.
